Silver linings

Thank you to everyone who commented on yesterday's post for your kindness. It was a terrible weekend. Yesterday once I got the diarrhea under control, I had terrible body aches for a few hours, then those subsided too. I was feeling a little better by last night, but even so, I decided not to take a chance on work today. I got in touch with my principal around 5:30 to let her know that I wouldn't be in today. I hate missing work (which is why I have around 50 unused sick days with more accruing every month) but when I've been really sick like this, I try not to feel guilty about it.

This morning in the early wee hours before dawn I woke up drenched in sweat, twice. Then when I really woke up and got up around 7:30 I felt much, much better. Maybe I was sweating out the last of it. I sure hope so.

There's a bright side to all this, though. I lost 5 pounds! Haha!

But seriously, though, I've been actively trying to lose weight since May or June. I managed to lose 35 pounds by August, then couldn't seem to lose any more. Considering that I've had to take prednisone and antibiotics three or four times this year, a nurse recently told me that I've done really well to maintain the loss and not regain. I know she's right, but it's still frustrating to do all the right things week after week and the scale doesn't budge. Now thanks to this nasty little virus, I've finally hit the 40-pound loss mark! That feels like a win, finally.

Maybe I'll even get lucky, and this virus will have served as a good purge and reset. It certainly felt like one!

  1. An effective diet but not one you would want to promote online..."Hi, I'm Jennifer and I just lost five pounds in one weekend! Send $50 for your own economy vial of "Slimvirus" and watch the weight fall away!"

  2. Some days we just have to take our silver linings where we find them!

  4. Viruses come, they torture us, and then, thankfully, they go. Some do take their own sweet time with it.

  6. Glad you're feeling better, but I hate to have to tell you this, most of that weight you lost was water and your cells will soon, not already, begin to absorb it back.

    1. I know. But it still felt good to see the scale go down a little again, even if it's temporary! And I've still lost 35.

  7. That's great you're feeling better. It just takes a minute for that to work itself out of the system and right the ship (our immune system). Still keep hydrated. Congrats on losing the 5 lbs. I've lost 82 lbs. in the last year and 4 months. Never thought I could do that. I became a vegetarian and walked up to 3 times a day. Discipline I never knew I had. If I was still working, there's no way I could manage that. Retirement does come with a few perks. Again, so glad you're on the upswing!

  8. So glad to read this Jennifer!!!!! It's it a shame how we feel guilty taking off when sick or vacation come around, even though we have earned that time. My job is very leant with sick days and vacation time...they even allot us three personal days to call in and no excuse need be given other than a personal health day. Vacation is one thing, but when I was sick last, I did feel guilty even though I was sick as a dog. But that was back in 2016. I haven't called out a day since. My boss tells me to call out and use them or lose them. So when my work is light, I do that. Don't need to tell me twice.

  9. What a nightmarish way to lose 5 pounds. I hope you are healing quickly and all well soon. You have a nice big stash of sick leave so no worries about using some of it.

  10. Good to know you are better, and you did well in giving yourself another day to recover. No use going back to work when you're not entirely yourself.
Congratulations on doing so well with your weight loss! I agree with what the nurse said, it's certainly not easy to maintain one's weight while on medication.

  12. My daughter is a teacher in the Bronx; I think she's had some illness or cold for months now. It's crazy. So glad you're feeling better!
